When You Should — and Shouldn’t — Consider Body Contouring
Body contouring gives you a way to improve your shape, but it’s not a weight-loss treatment. Use this guide to help you decide if it’s right for you.

Every person has unique characteristics, including their shape. Some people carry more weight around their abdomen, while others notice that excess pounds go to their thighs. Even if you lose weight, you might continue to be bothered by problem areas.

Fortunately, Jean Johnson, MD, has a way to help. At Rejuvenation For Her in Weston, Florida, she offers two types of body contouring. To help you decide if this kind of treatment might be right for you, let’s explore some factors that make you a good candidate — and a less-than-ideal one — for body contouring.

When body contouring may not be the right choice

First up, let’s talk about some things that disqualify you from being a good fit for body contouring.

Most importantly, body contouring isn’t a weight loss treatment. It offers a way to shape certain parts of your body, but it’s not a good option if you still want to shed a lot of pounds. Dr. Johnson and other experts recommend being at or near your goal weight before getting this kind of treatment.

For optimal outcomes, it’s also helpful if you’re a nonsmoker and generally healthy. If you currently smoke or you’re dealing with a major health condition, now might not be the right time for body contouring.

When you could be a good candidate for body contouring

Body contouring could be right for you if you’re at a stable weight, in good health, and you’re ready to move closer to your optimal shape. Dr. Johnson can use it to address:

  • Belly fat
  • Love handles
  • Inner or outer thigh fat
  • Rolls below your butt

If any of these issues sound familiar, come talk with Dr. Johnson.

She offers two types of body contouring at our office: VelaShape® and UltraShape®. VelaShape uses a combination of radiofrequency, infrared light, and vacuum technology, while UltraShape uses ultrasound. Both treatments are noninvasive and painless.

What to expect with body contouring

During body contouring, you simply relax while Dr. Johnson glides the appropriate device over the targeted area, delivering the ultrasound or radiofrequency/infrared/vacuum energy used to reshape the tissue.

Treatment usually takes about an hour, and you don’t need to do anything special to prepare. You also don’t need to worry about any downtime afterward. The results aren’t immediate, but you should notice improvement within a few weeks.

For best results, Dr. Johnson usually recommends a series of three or more sessions with two weeks between each. To maintain your results, stick with a healthy diet and regular exercise.
